23/10/2008 - Multi millionaire councillor and businessman buys sports ground and gifts it to the town

Ok, the journalist has spelt the name of the BRAZA wrong, and there were never fears about March Rangers teams becoming homeless, but this is a great opportunity for the club, and Sports Development in General for March. 7 a side and 9 a side matches will continue to be played at Estover playing field, but the winter training venue will now be at the Elm Road Sports Field (BRAZA) for all teams.

By ADAM LAZZARI

A PROMINENT March businessman and councillor has stepped in to save the future of three of the town's sports clubs by buying the BRSA sports ground.

Councillor Peter Skoulding bought the Elm Road site for a figure believed to be in the region of £175,000 and reserved it for community use.

He said: "I'm a March man through and through and I want to see the town flourish.

"I've done well for myself here and this is my way of giving something back."

We reported exclusively how members of March Bears Rugby Club, March Athletic Club and March Rangers Football Club feared they would become homeless when the site went up for sale in May.

Brasa Club trustee Terry Stevens put the site up for sale because he no longer wanted the responsibility of running the facilities and if a buyer had not come forward it would have been closed with nobody running it.

March Bears are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year but president Barry Feetham believes the club would have folded if Mr Skoulding had not stepped in.

He said: "This is an absolute god-send for us.

"With the club not knowing where would play many players become unsettled and go elsewhere and we've been really struggling, if Mr Skoulding had not come in there is no doubt in my mind we would have folded."

March Athletic Club chairman Peter Jackman said: "We have a wonderful running track and some fantastic facilities for youngsters to use and it would be a terrible shame to see these go to waste.

"We are forever grateful for Mr Skoulding for coming in and giving us the stability we need to grow.

"It's places like this that keeps the kids off the streets."

March Rangers manager Robert Chapman added: "I'm absolutely delighted and it's onwards and upwards for us now."

The BRSA sports ground has been used by several sports clubs since 1962.

Mr Skoulding holds the position of portfolio holder responsible for Fenland's finances at Fenland District Council and is the owner of property developers Snowmountain Enterprises Ltd.

He received an MBE for services to local government last year.

28/08/2008 - Under 8's Revised Fixtures

The under 8 fixture order has been revised. Instead of our first game being at Walpole, we are now at Whittlesey. The day of matches (either Sat or Sun) for both home and away matches will be advised the week before. The fixtures on this site should now be correct, a paper copy will be given to parents when I get some ink for my printer...

27/08/2008 - COME AND JOIN US

.LOYAL March Rangers Ladies football team player Ella Rolfe has issued an SOS to save her team.

She plays with the club’s U16 team - having started three years ago with the U13s. But the team could fold unless more players come forward.

Ella said: “Unfortunately this year, due to other commitments, we have lost many players, which has coincided with us moving into a 9-a-side league. This means, without a few more players, we won’t have a team, as we simply don’t have the players.”

And she has words of encouragement for girls who fear they might not be good enough.

She said: “I still remember how nervous I was going to the first training, thinking would I be good enough? But the night was really enjoyable, everyone helped me out with things I found difficult and, by the end, I didn’t want to go home! I still feel the same way now.

“If there are any girls out there who, like me, want to play but don’t think they will be good enough, come along to training and you’ll see just how entertaining being part of March Rangers is!

“It’s a great way of keeping fit and to be part of something really rewarding.”

The club trains on Thursday at the Elm Road sports field in March, from 6pm-7.30 pm. For further information visit www.marchrangers.co.uk or call Ian Huggins, on 07919-370963.

21/08/2008 - Under 16's Girls In Danger

Rangers In Danger?

For three years I have been a member of one of many teams in the March Rangers squad. I started as an U13’s member and I still remember how nervous I was going to the first training, thinking would I be good enough? Would they laugh at a girl like me trying to play football? Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong. The night was really enjoyable, everyone helped me out with things I found difficult and by the end I didn’t want to go home! I still feel the same way now. I look forward to training every week and a match at the weekend where we all pull together with our parents cheering us on and our manager, Ian Huggins, coaching us from the sidelines. We do take the game seriously as the feeling of winning cannot be beaten, especially when it is announced at our presentation evenings and Christmas discos, but we do have a lot of fun along the way. Unfortunately, this year, due to other commitments, we have lost many players, which has coincided with us moving into a 9-a side league. This means without a few more players for our U16 girl’s side we wont have a team, as we simply don’t have the players. Those of us that are currently in the team will have to leave the laughs behind. We could find another club but it’s not guaranteed we will be able to and we’ll definitely all be split up. Please, if there are any girls out there, who like me, want to play but don’t think they will be good enough, come along to training and you’ll see just how entertaining being part of March Rangers is! It’s a great way of keeping fit and to be part of something really rewarding. Training is at Elm Road Sports Field, previously known as The Braza Sports Field, from 6 – 7:30 pm.

Hope to see many of you girls there!

Ella Rolfe.

20/08/2008 - RESPECT

RESPECT

The FA is inviting every league in the country to sign-up to the principles of Respect and to introduce some practical steps at club level to ensure football is played in a safe, positive environment.

The programme is free to join and there are resources available to support clubs to introduce Respect.

The Respect programme includes four practical steps to improve behaviour - on the pitch and on the sidelines - in and at matches throughout the country:

Step 1: Respect Codes of Conduct
There is a Code of Conduct for each of the five main types of football participant: Young Players, Adult Players, Spectators and Parents/Carers, Coaches, Team Managers and Club Officials, and Match Officials. Each Code explains actions can be taken if the Code is broken.

Step 2: Designated Spectator Areas
The FA recommends you introduce marked areas along the touchlines, within which spectators must stay. The idea behind this is to encourage parents and spectators to take a step back from the pitch and support the teams in a more responsible manner.

Step 3: Captain taking responsibility
There will be a drive to enhance captaincy skills, encouraging captains to take full responsibility for their players' actions and behaviour.

Step 4: Referee managing the game
There will be a similar drive to enhance referees' match management skills - to create an environment where potential problems are addressed before they escalate.

This is supported by an education programme, with Respect modules being added into all FA Learning courses.

My Role in Respect

Respect affects the entire game, and needs your help, regardless of how you are involved in football.

PLAYERS

Whether you're in the starting eleven or on the bench, your role as a player is crucial to the success of Respect.

On a matchday, you'll be expected to work with your coaches and your captain to allow the referee to manage the game without being subjected to abuse. With the game losing thousands of referees from the game every year, it's hugely important, because without the referees, the game isn't the same.

If the league you play in adopts the Respect programme, you will be asked to read, agree to, and sign, a Code of Conduct at your club. This will be your 'promise' to abide by a set of rules governing your behaviour as a player. Working together with your coach, your captain, and each referee that takes charge of your games during the season, you can play a major role in improving the game for everyone, through Respect.

COACHES

Coaches have a hugely important role to play in Respect, as they are not only responsible for their own behaviour, but they can also influence that of their players and spectators, too.

On a matchday, you'll be expected to work with your players, parents and other spectators to allow the referee to manage the game without being subjected to abuse.

REFEREES

The Respect programme aims to allow Referees to officiate matches without being subjected to abuse by players, coaches or spectators - and the referees themselves have a key part to play in the process.

Working in partnership with the clubs they officiate, referees can provide post-match feedback regarding the behaviour of players, parents, coaches and other spectators, to help the clubs enforce their Codes of Conduct.

PARENTS AND SPECTATORS

Parents have a big responsibility as part of the Respect programme.

Respect is working to eradicate touchline abuse in football, and parents can play their part by agreeing to, and signing, their club's Code of Conduct and abiding by them throughout the season.

Parents also have a responsibility for their children's behaviour. The players will also be asked to sign a Code of Conduct, and parents can encourage their children to adhere to the players' code.

CLUB AND LEAGUE OFFICIALS

The Respect programme relies on clubs and leagues to take active steps to ensure high standards of conduct throughout their club or league.

Leagues can champion the Respect programme, and communicate the importance of Respect to their member clubs through meetings and bulletins.

Club officials can sign up to and enforce Codes of Conduct for their players, coaches, parents and spectators, which will set the standard for behaviour throughout their club.

The Captain's Role

As your team's captain, you have a vital role to play in helping us achieve the number one priority for footballers in The FA's biggest-ever survey of grassroots football - a referee for every game.

Seven thousand referees are dropping out each season because of the abuse and intimidation they receive. It ruins games and can cause matches to be abandoned. Then we've all lost.

Captain taking responsibility

As a captain, you have no special status or privileges under the Laws of the Game, but you do have a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of your team.

To promote Respect, the referee will work with you, as the team captain, to manage the players and the game effectively.

Even if you are some way away from an incident when the referee feels he/she needs you involved in a discussion with a player, the referee will call you over. This will ensure that, as the team captain, you remain the point of contact for the referee.

How Captains can help to instil Respect:

Ensure you wear a Respect captain's armband - these will be provided by your league to your club

Together with your opposition captain, make yourself known to the referee before the game. He/she will ask if you are clear about your responsibilities

Ensure all your players understand what they can/cannot do in relation to the referee and what is meant by 'unwanted behaviour'. No-one's trying to curb enthusiasm - just instil more discipline. This can only benefit your match - and football as a whole

Ensure your vice-captain (appoint one if you haven't got one) is aware of these rules, in case you are unavailable for a game, or have to leave the field

Ensure every player in your team has signed the Respect Code of Conduct

28/06/2008 - Under 7's perform well in Clenchwarton Tournament

March Rangers Under 7’s enjoyed a sunny day at the Clenchwarton tournament, before bowing out in the Semi-Finals to eventual winners Reffley. We were unbeaten in our 6 group matches, going through as group runners up. We were the only team to take points off (and score against!) a very strong Heacham side in the group stages as we drew 1-1, conceding a late equaliser in what was our best individual performance in a tournament. It was a great set of matches in our group stages winning 3, drawing 3 and losing none. We were unlucky also not to have won the three games we drew.

We were up against it against Reffley who scored two of their goals direct from kick-offs! All their other goals came from distance, but we had several chances of our own, rewarded with Garrison’s strike. Only bad luck prevented is from scoring more, but Reffley were the stronger team physically. We went to a 3rd/4th place play off against Heacham, but after 6 hours at Clenchwarton, we switched positions around to give some variation, and that along with a bit of fatigue saw us lose 2-0, Heacham adding their second late on with a quick break. There were some outstanding and brave performances from the 7 boys, who were up against several teams much stronger physically, and we had to rely on ball skill, teamwork and determination.

There were some excellent teams there on the day, demonstrated by the fact that Hungate, Outwell and the two Wisbech St. Mary sides were unable to progress past the group stages.

The team was Matthew, Kieran, Callum, Kyle, Brandon, Luke, Garrison. Matthew and Kieran did the bulk of the work in goal, with Kyle and Brandon also having a game each in goal.

Goalscorers

Garrison – 10

Luke – 2

Brandon

Callum

Well done!!!
